For Ellsbury, these are tough times at the plate and on the bases
05:52 AM EDT on Tuesday, July 29, 2008
BOSTON -- Jacoby Ellsbury’s stolen bases have dipped considerably in the last month as the rookie outfielder has slumped.
Ellsbury is still the American League leader, with 35, but he last stole a base on July 1 and has been thrown out three straight times and four of his last five.
“If you’re on base two or three times a game,” said Red Sox manager Terry Francona, “it’s a little easier (to steal).”
After successfully stealing his first 25 bases, Ellsbury has been caught seven times in his last 17 tries, perhaps dampening his aggressiveness.
“I don’t doubt it messes with your confidence a bit (when you’re caught),” acknowledged Francona. “But we were playing a series of games where we were losing and if it doesn’t add up to go (then you don’t).”
