Red Sox have never had a closer like Papelbon
07:19 AM EDT on Wednesday, July 23, 2008
SEATTLE -- Jonathan Papelbon made Red Sox history with his one-two-three ninth inning last night.
That gave Papelbon 30 saves for the third straight season. No other Red Sox reliever has done it three times, much less in consecutive seasons.
``It is pretty amazing, because it doesn't seem like it's that much of a big deal,'' Papelbon said. ``I don't think it is. The goal is to get every save I can. But it feels good to be able to do that. Hopefuly, this is the beginning of a long run.''
More late notes
Dustin Pedroia extended his road hitting streak to 23 straight games. He's hit safely in 24 of the last 25 at a .439 clip. However, for the second straight night, he failed to get a multihit game. ... Manny Ramirez extended his hitting streak to 11 straight games, during which he is hitting .487 (19-for-39) with nine RBI. ... The Sox had two sacrifice flies and one sacrifice bunt. Also, Jacoby Ellsbury twice tried to bunt for hits -- once successsfully.
