Buchholz will lead Red Sox rotation out of All-Star break
08:09 AM EDT on Monday, July 14, 2008
BOSTON - For the past week, Red Sox manager Terry Francona kept his post All-Star break rotation to himself. Yesterday morning he finally announced what the start of the second half of the season will look like. Clay Buchholz will start the first game in Anaheim on Friday, followed by Josh Beckett, Tim Wakefield, Jon Lester and Daisuke Matsuzaka.
“The idea is to incorporate some rest for some people and some balance, I think we are accomplishing that,” said Francona.
Lester will have the most rest for any pitcher. His last start was July 8 against the Twins at Fenway. He’ll have 12 days off between starts.
“I hope [it helps],” Francona said. “It doesn’t look like he needs a lot of help. He feels good. We’re just trying to look out for everybody.”
The southpaw carries a 7-3 record into the break, along with a 3.38 ERA. He’s leading the club with 125 innings pitched. He said he was looking forward to the rest.
