Red Sox boost security following threat against minority players
07:24 AM EDT on Tuesday, July 1, 2008
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Red Sox had additional security on hand yesterday, the result of a threat first reported by the Boston Herald.
The Herald reported that a letter, postmarked from Memphis, Tenn., threatened several of the team’s African-American and Latino players, citing at least two by name.
Major League Baseball provided additional security detail and at least three Red Sox security agents were on hand at Tropicana Field.
Sox manager Terry Francona refused to address the issue.
“I will not discuss it out of respect for everybody concerned,” he said.
