Youkilis, an on-base and strikeout machine
08:07 AM EDT on Thursday, June 26, 2008
BOSTON - For a guy who is known for his high on-base percentage, Kevin Youkilis strikes out more than you might imagine.
Youkilis struck out when his foul tip was held onto in the third inning. It was the 54th whiff in 267 at-bats for Youkilis, meaning he strikes out 20.2 percent of the time. That figure is in keeping with his numbers last year, when he fanned 105 times in 528 at-bats, a 19.9 percentage.
Despite those strikeout totals, Youkilis still is one of the tops in on-base percentage. His .390 last year was 11th in the league. He was at .376 this season, not far from the Yankees’ Johnny Damon, who was 10th at .390.
