Promising rally fizzles out in fifth
08:05 AM EDT on Thursday, June 26, 2008
BOSTON - The bottom of the fifth featured a lot of little things, good and bad. And somehow the Red Sox didn’t score.
It began with Julio Lugo ripping a liner to left-center. Arizona left fielder Eric Byrnes took a terrible angle on the ball, so it got over his head for a double.
Jacoby Ellsbury was given the sign to bunt. He took the first pitch for a ball, then fouled a bunt attempt at the plate. The bunt sign off, Ellsbury failed to move the runner to third. He lofted a soft fly ball to left for an out.
Lugo, though, swiped third base with Dustin Pedroia at the plate. The throw from catcher Miguel Montero short-hopped Mark Reynolds at third or Lugo might have been out. One reason for the bad throw was that Montero didn’t have a clear lane to throw in. He had to jump behind Pedroia to throw around him.
The Diamondbacks’ infield was in. Pedroia hit a chopper over the mound. Second baseman Orlando Hudson made a diving play going to his right. Lugo, though, was frozen at third. Pedroia beat Hudson’s throw to first for an infield single, giving the Sox runners at first and third with one out.
Boston, however, came up empty because Youkilis grounded into an inning-ending double play, started by Reynolds.
