Wakefield shows he is more than just a knuckleball pitcher
08:09 AM EDT on Thursday, June 26, 2008
BOSTON - Pity poor Conor Jackson last night in his fourth-inning at-bat.
Naturally, he was expecting the knuckler. But he didn’t get the butterfly pitch. Tim Wakefield lofted a 59-mph curveball to Jackson, who flailed at it and missed. Jackson didn’t get a knuckleball on the next pitch, either. It was another 59-mph curveball, and again Jackson swung wildly and missed.
On 0-and-2, Wakefield buzzed Jackson, throwing his “heater” (75 mph) up and in. Wakefield then missed with yet another curveball, this one at 58 mph, before finally going back to his knuckleball.
The frustrated Jackson fouled the first one off and then swung and missed the next one for a strikeout.
