Bad luck helps kill Sox rally in 12th
07:14 AM EDT on Monday, June 23, 2008
BOSTON - It wasn’t bad baserunning. It was bad luck.
Dustin Pedroia led off the 12th with a double. J.D. Drew whacked the next pitch on the bounce up the middle.
The ball might have gone through the middle for a game-winning hit. At the very least, it was behind Pedroia, so it should have been easy for him to make it to third.
But pitcher Ron Villone reached back with his bare hand and deflected the ball, slowing it down. Shortstop Aaron Miles fielded it and threw to Troy Glaus at third base, wiping out a surprised Pedroia on a tag play that wasn’t close. Sean Casey then banged into a double play, sending the game to the 13th.
