J.D. Drew silences the Philly boo birds
07:11 AM EDT on Tuesday, June 17, 2008
PHILADELPHIA - It was in 1997 that the Phillies made J.D. Drew their No. 1 draft pick and the second selection overall but, prodded by agent Scott Boras, Drew turned his back on Philadelphia and didn’t sign with the organization. Drew was picked fifth overall by the Cardinals the following year.
Phillies fans, though, have never forgiven Drew. When his name was announced during the pregame lineups, Drew was lustily booed. He was booed every time he came to the plate, too.
Well, the truth is, the Phillies fans did cheer him — when he struck out in the first inning.
Drew, though, had a laugh at the fans’ expense. He crushed a homer to center in the fifth, well over the fence at the 398-foot marker. It was his 12th of the season and sixth in his last nine games.
