Inside The Game: Pedroia's aggressiveness costs the Sox
07:36 AM EDT on Wednesday, June 11, 2008
BOSTON -- Dustin Pedroia is the type of player who always feels he can make a play, even if it’s not possible.
That aggressiveness and confidence came back to bite Pedroia and the Sox in the ninth inning.
Boston was one run down, 7-6, and the Orioles had a runner at first with none out. Melvin Mora hit a soft roller to shortstop. Alex Cora charged it and made a quick feed to Pedroia.
Pedroia was thinking “two” when he should have just gotten the one out on this play. He tried to be too quick with his hands, knowing his only chance for a double play — and it was a slim one, at best — was to make the fastest relay he could.
In trying to do so, Pedroia took his eyes off the ball and just plain dropped the ball for an error, giving the Orioles first and second with none out. That error led to three runs and a 10-6 Baltimore advantage. Game over.
