Slumping Pedroia, Crisp find ways to contribute

BOSTON -- Second baseman Dustin Pedroia is in an awful slump at the plate, but he hasn’t let it affect his defense.

In the seventh inning, playing in shallow right and swung over in the hole, Pedroia took a couple steps to his left, made a diving stab of a one-hop bullet crushed by Carlos Pena, got up and fired to first for the eye-popping inning-ending out.

His miseries at the plate continued, though. Pedroia went 0-for-3, including a pair of whiffs.

Over his last 11 games, Pedroia is batting a paltry .152 (7 for 46), a drought that has dropped his average from .304 to .276.

Meanwhile, Coco Crisp may have lofted the tie-breaking hit, a two-run double to the opposite field, but he’s still a dismal 4-for-40 (.100) over the last 11 games, plunging his average from .315 to .250.
