BALTIMORE -- Red Sox pitcher Bartolo Colon continues to impress. The veteran right-hander, who signed with Boston at the start of spring training, has picked up the win in his three starts since joining the rotation on May 21 after an early season rehab assignment. He worked six innings yesterday and allowed four runs on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts. He threw a season-high 102 pitches (63 strikes).
“I give credit to the hitters who have given me run support,” said Colon. “And, I am happy with the way I’m throwing the ball.”
His velocity has increased each start, but Colon said yesterday he felt it could have been better. He expects it to increase. Boston management felt it was taking a calculated gamble by signing Colon, and it has already paid off nicely.
“I’m not surprised,” said Manny Ramirez. “I knew he could do it. I played with him for seven years (Cleveland) and I know what he can do.”
