DETROIT -- Dustin Pedroia began last night's game on the bench, with manager Terry Francona giving him a bit of a breather.

Jed Lowrie replaced Pedroia at second base. But with the game tied and runners at first and second with two outs in the eighth, Francona plucked Pedroia off the bench to pinch hit for Lowrie against Francisco Cruceta.
Pedroia worked the count full, fouled off a pitch and then rapped a ground ball through the left side, delivering J.D. Drew from second with the run that put Boston on top, 9-8.
It was the second time this season Pedroia hasn’t started a game but has come through with a crucial pinch-hit in the eighth. On April 20, Pedroia drilled a game-tying double against the Angels and eventually scored the winning run.
