OAKLAND - Mike Timlin had the stitches removed Sunday from his lacerated right ring finger and has been cleared to begin long toss.

Timlin has been sidelined since before the Sox left for Japan. When the club put him on the disabled list Saturday night, they made the move retroactive, and he’s eligible to come off the DL Friday, when the Sox begin a weekend series in Toronto.
But because Timlin is just now starting to throw again, he’ll need additional time to rebuild his arm strength. Manager Terry Francona hinted yesterday that the veteran reliever may need a rehab appearance or two with Pawtucket before being activated.
That will probably take place after the Sox return from this trip, Sunday night.
