Red Sox injury front: Caution still the rule with Beckett
08:15 AM EDT on Thursday, March 13, 2008
FORT MYERS, Fla. - On the injury front, the biggest concern for Boston right now is Josh Beckett, who has been hampered by back spasms. His status changes daily as he’s been having some good days and some uncomfortable days. There’s still no word on whether he’ll make the trip to Japan next week, but the club will be cautious.
“With a guy like Beckett, we’re certainly going to be careful, and he knows that,” said manager Terry Francona. “But there’s also that respect factor of who he is and what he has accomplished and how he works. We want to give him that respect.”
Shortstop Julio Lugo (back) said he feels good, and he was able to take batting practice and ground balls yesterday. Francona said the team is hoping Lugo can play tomorrow. Switch-hitting center fielder Coco Crisp (groin) was able to take swings from both sides of the plate yesterday and, according to Francona, Crisp still is sore when hitting from the right side. There’s no timetable on his return, but management will discuss the next course of action with the medical staff today.
Second baseman Dustin Pedroia (flu) said yesterday he felt a lot better and is scheduled to be back in the lineup today.
