Papelbon impresses fans with expanded arsenal
08:10 AM EDT on Wednesday, March 12, 2008
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon worked two scoreless innings (sixth and seventh innings) against the Mets yesterday, with two strikeouts. The hard-throwing right-hander wowed the 7,948 fans with what appeared to be midseason form. He has been working on his slider more this spring.
“It’s a third option, and against some hitters it might be a good weapon,” said manager Terry Francona.
The manager said he feels that pitch will complement Papelbon’s fastball and splitter greatly. Papelbon added the slider to his arsenal last season, and he’s more confident with it this spring.
