Your Turn: Should the Red Sox give Jonathan Papelbon what he wants?
Second baseman Dustin Pedroia has essentially agreed to a one-year deal for $457,000. Pedroia, who played for the major-league minimum ($380,000) last season, wanted to be paid a little more than Milwaukee’s Ryan Braun, who was the N.L. Rookie of the Year — Pedroia was chosen in the A.L. — but didn’t get to the big leagues until May.
Braun was renewed last week by the Brewers at $455,000.
Manny Delcarmen, who last year made $389,500, has agreed to a deal for $421,000. Jon Lester yesterday agreed to a deal that is believed to pay him $422,500.
Also recently agreeing to terms were pitcher Clay Buchholz and outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury.
Papelbon remains firm in his request for $900,000, with the Red Sox offering a figure of more than $750,000. If Papelbon doesn’t agree to terms today, the Sox will renew him at a lower figure, and he could lose potential incentives, too.
