“In getting ready for the season,” Matsuzaka said, “I feel like I’m making steady progress. My start today was good preparation.”
Matsuzaka said he was happy with his breaking ball, but command of his fastball “needs work.”
Matsuzaka’s wife is expecting a baby late this month, which could put his March 26 start in his native Japan in jeopardy.
“It’s one of those things you have to leave to nature,” he said. “So I can’t say one way or another (whether I will go) right now. Of course, I would like to go to Tokyo, I just hope that everyone can be happy.”
