Boston Red Sox
Cash's roster spot in jeopardy

If, as expected, Tim Wakefield is added to the Red Sox ALCS 25-man roster, someone else will have to go.
It’s likely that someone else will be catcher Kevin Cash, who was something of a surprise addition to the ALDS roster. The Sox liked the flexibility of carrying three catchers, reasoning that it would make it easier to utilize Jacoby Ellsbury as a pinch-runner for a catcher knowing that they had an extra in reserve.
Cash didn’t see any action in the Sox’ three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
But with Wakefield added to the roster as the 11th pitcher — and projected Game Four starter — in the seven-game series, the Sox probably don’t have the luxury of a third catcher.
The remaining extras — backup catcher Doug Mirabelli, infielder Alex Cora, first baseman Eric Hinske and outfielder Bobby Kielty — all fill specific needs. Kielty, in fact, could be the logical choice to start the ALCS opener with lefty C.C. Sabathia slated to pitch for Cleveland.
