Boston Red Sox
June 7 - One Out from a Milestone
07:09 AM EDT on Tuesday, October 2, 2007
Curt Schilling is one out away from the first no-hitter of his illustrious career.
He stares in for the sign as he stands on the mound in Oakland.
Catcher Jason Varitek calls for a slider. Curt Schilling shakes him off. He wants to start Shannon Stewart off with a fastball.
Mistake.
Stewart laces a clean single through the right side of the infield. End of no-hit bid.
Schilling, though, retires Mark Ellis on a popup and earns a 1-0 win, built on David Ortiz's homer in the first, as Boston snaps its four-game skid.
