At the trading deadline, the Red Sox pull off a deal that brings former All-Star closer Eric Gagne.
Boston boasts a comfortable seven-game lead over the Yankees in the division. In theory, acquiring Gagne gives the Sox another quality set-up arm to ace closer Jonathan Papelbon, taking some of that workload off the tiring shoulder of Hideki Okajima. And it also keeps Gagne from going to the Yanks, who seemingly need late-inning relief help more than Boston.
