Baseball Notebook: Cairo gets one-year pact from Yanks
01:00 AM EST on Tuesday, January 9, 2007
Infielder Miguel Cairo decided to remain with the New York Yankees, reaching a preliminary agreement on a $750,000, one-year contract.
Cairo, who must pass a physical for the deal to be completed, hit .239 with 30 RBI in 222 at-bats last season. He also played for the Yankees in 2004, then spent 2005 with the New York Mets.
In addition to his salary, he would earn $50,000 bonuses for 350 and 400 plate appearances.
ROUNDUP SANCHEZ, METS AGREE: Reliever Duaner Sanchez and the New York Mets agreed yesterday to an $850,000, one-year contract, more than double the $399,500 he earned last season. Sanchez was acquired from the Dodgers last year, and the 27-year-old right-hander went 5-1 with 2.60 E.R.A. in 49 relief appearances.
GRIFFEY ON REBOUND: Ken Griffey Jr.'s broken left hand is healing as expected, and the Cincinnati Reds will have a better idea in about 10 days whether it will interfere with spring training. Griffey had the hand x-rayed over the weekend in Orlando, Fla., where he lives in the offseason. He will be examined again in about 10 days, the team announced yesterday.
TWO IN MINOR DEALS: Left-hander Bobby Seay and outfielder Timo Perez have agreed to minor-league contracts with the A.L.-champion Detroit Tigers. Seay appeared in 14 games and had a 6.46 E.R.A. with the American League champions last season. Perez hit .194 with three RBI in 23 games last year for the World Series-champion St. Louis Cardinals and was cut in August.
