Baseball Notebook: Wright signs 4-year deal

01:00 AM EDT on Monday, August 7, 2006

David Wright became the latest young player on the New York Mets to get a longterm contract, signing a $55-million, six-year extension yesterday.

Wright, 23, joins Jose Reyes, who signed a $23.25-million, four-year extension on Thursday.

"It's been an exciting week for us," Mets general manager Omar Minaya said. "To reach agreements with both Jose and David means the left side of our infield is secure for the next several years."

Wright is hitting .308 with 22 homers and 82 RBI this season. He has 11 stolen bases.

ROUNDUP EATON EJECTED: Adam Eaton was ejected from the Texas Rangers' game against the Los Angeles Angels in the first inning after throwing a pitch behind Juan Rivera -- one pitch after Garret Anderson's three-run homer. After Eaton's 18th pitch, a 90-mph fastball, Rivera made a move to the mound and was grabbed by plate umpire Rob Drake.

ARIZONA RECALLS TWO: The Arizona Diamondbacks designated left-hander Randy Choate for assignment and optioned right-handed Dustin Nippert to Triple-A Tucson. They recalled reliever Jeff Bajaneru and infielder Alberto Callaspo from their top farm club.

JACKSON OPTIONED: The Tampa Bay Devil Rays optioned struggling right-hander Edwin Jackson to Triple-A Durham and activated reliever Dan Miceli from the 60-day disabled list yesterday.
