Manny may skip All-Star Game

BOSTON -- Manny Ramirez, whose vote totals in the balloting would make him a starter in the All-Star Game in Pittsburgh on July 11, may not go to the midsummer classic, at the Red Sox' request. Ramirez has been bothered by a sore right knee. He missed a game in Atlanta on June 17, and manager Terry Francona has been taking him out late in games that the Red Sox have well in hand, replacing him with either Willie Harris or Gabe Kapler. Francona said he would call Phyllis Merhige, vice president of administration and media affairs for the American League, to inform her that Ramirez might not participate so he can get extra rest for his knee. "I think we need to contact the league. My recommendation is that he not play," said Francona. "It's something we need to think about. We have the responsibility to get our players to play as many games for the Red Sox as we can. "It's a touchy situation. I'll let Phyllis know I've been taking him out of games," said Francona. "I don't think (Ramirez's knee) feels too good. I'm taking him out (of games) in situations where we haven't (in the past)." In other Manny news, the Boston Globe reported yesterday that Ramirez's agent, Greg Genske, told Boston general manager Theo Epstein about a month ago that Ramirez wants to spend the rest of this year and hopefully the rest of his career in Boston. That desire, of course, is counter to Ramirez's wish to be traded almost a year ago, which led to much drama and a deal with the Mets that fell through. Francona said Epstein had informed him of the agent's remarks. Francona said he had gotten nothing but positive vibes from Ramirez since spring training. Ramirez has two more years on his contract after this season, calling for roughly $40 million. "He seems very comfortable. I see the other side of him. He may not talk to you guys (the media). There may have been some bumps in the road last year, which may have taken on a life of their own. But he's always been the same, very lovable. He's a great kid," said Francona. skrasner@projo.com / (401) 277-7340
