Baseball Notebook: Tigers' Young placed on DL
01:00 AM EDT on Sunday, April 16, 2006
The Detroit Tigers yesterday placed designated hitter Dmitri Young on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained right quadriceps muscle, the team announced yesterday.
Young was hurt while running the bases in the sixth inning of Friday night's 5-1 home win over the Cleveland Indians. Young, 32, is hitting .219, with three runs batted in, over eight games this season. He hit .271 with 21 home runs and 72 RBI last season in spite of missing much of the final month due to an injured right leg.
ROUNDUP
EDMONDS AILING: St. Louis Cardinals center fielder Jim Edmonds, who has struggled in the early season, was out of the lineup for yesterday's game against the Cincinnati Reds after receiving a cortisone shot for an aching right shoulder.
YANKEES MOVES: The New York Yankees signed infielder Carlos Pena and right-hander Jesus Colome to minor-league deals yesterday. Both players will report to the team's spring training headquarters in Tampa, Fla., before being assigned to Triple-A Columbus. Colome spent the last five seasons with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, going 2-3 with a 4.57 E.R.A. in 36 appearances last season. He appeared in 186 games with Tampa Bay, fourth-most in team history for pitchers. He was released last week after leaving a game against Baltimore with shoulder stiffness. Pena cleared waivers from the Detroit Tigers on May 30, making him a free agent. He signed a $2.8-million, one-year contract with the Tigers prior to the season that wasn't guaranteed.
CASEY OUT: First baseman Sean Casey will be out of the Pittsburgh Pirates' lineup for six to eight weeks as a result of two fractures in his left lower back. Casey, the Pirates' highest-paid player, was injured during Friday night's game against the Cubs while he was stretching for a throw. As John Mabry was running out an infield single in the third inning, he stumbled crossing the bag and clipped Casey with his hip or left elbow. The fractures occurred in an area of the lower back where the muscles are attached to the vertebrae, but the 31-year-old Casey isn't expected to undergo surgery.
MORE PROBLEMS FOR BONDS: Barry Bonds, the Giants' left fielder, told MLB.com that he has "10 to 12 bone chips floating" in his left elbow, which he said was swollen to "almost twice the size" of his right elbow. Bonds indicated that he wants to keep playing, as ballplayers with bone chips often do, but plan to undergo surgery to fix the problem.
