In 1987, Burks played against current Red Sox third-base coach Dale Sveum (Milwaukee Brewers). Manager Terry Francona was also an active major-leaguer in '87, but he was in the National League (Cincinnati Reds).

Curt Schilling was in the Red Sox organization in 1987, with Class A Greensboro.

Mike Timlin was also in professional baseball in '87, at Rookie League Medicine Hat in the Toronto Blue Jays organization.

The only other current Red Sox player out of high school in 1987 was Tim Wakefield.

Five current Red Sox players -- Bronson Arroyo, Byung-Hyun Kim, Scott Williamson, David Ortiz and Gabe Kapler -- were still in elementary school in 1987.
