November advice for job hunters: Looking for a job in finance
A degree in finance can be used in almost every public and private business organization where mathematical aptitude and the use of financial information are required. Many individuals with a degree in finance often limit their job searches to banks, corporate finance departments and stock brokerage firms and do not consider mutual fund, insurance and real estate firms. Jobs in insurance and real estate may also require certifications such as CPCU (Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter) and CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter), advanced degrees or specialized licenses. Jobs in insurance include underwriter, sales representative and customer service representative and asset manager. Jobs in real estate are in mortgage banking, title insurance, property management, real estate appraisal and real estate development. The non-for-profit sector also requires people with a background in finance. The current recession has reduced the number of job opportunities in finance. However, when the recession is over, there will be a demand for individuals with a finance background because finance plays such a critical role in our society.

September job outlook: R.I. needs to upgrade its workforce
Many Rhode Island policy makers and legislators are "fiddling" while Rhode Island's economic situation worsens. There was hope that Rhode Island would be among the first of the states to get out of the recession. High taxes, huge entitlement programs, the perception of an unfriendly state to business, an unrealistic economic development strategy, more foreclosures, a further reduction in home prices and a growing state budget deficit can keep the state in a recession well into 2010.

September advice for job hunters: How to answer those difficult questions at job interviews
This column deals with five difficult questions often asked at an interview and offers guidance on how to answer these questions. The job interview is the most important part of the job search process. Before the interview, research the company by looking at its website and try to anticipate the interviewer's questions. Practicing for your interview will help you be better prepared to answer questions and will make you sound more polished. The purpose is to never let an interview question stump you. Your responses at the job interview are more important than how well the resume is written.
