Faculty member honored: John Ribezzo of Cranston, chairman of the business administration department, has been inducted into the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs Hall of Fame. Membership in the Hall of Fame is designed to recognize educators and industry leaders who have made significant contributions to Region 1 of the ACBSP — the leading specialized accreditation association for business education programs — and its mission of excellence in business education. Since he became involved in the organization in 1991, Ribezzo has served in several capacities, including president of the region, and now serves as its treasurer. He has taught at CCRI for 30 years and is entering his sixth year as department chairman.
New Writing Center Web site: The college’s Writing Center has created an extensive Web site featuring handouts in PDF format that students can download, as well as information about its locations and policies and answers to frequently asked questions. The site is located at http://www.ccri.edu/writingcenter. The site also contains links to multiple external Web sites that might be useful to faculty and students.
Johnson & Wales University
Chronicles Its Unique History: HERstory: The Founding Mothers of Johnson & Wales will air on WSBE-TV, Rhode Island’s PBS station, at 11:30 a.m. today and at 7 p.m. tomorrow. Men of Vision will air at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 31 and at 7 p.m. Sept. 1. HERstory chronicles the contributions of Gertrude Johnson and Mary Wales, who in 1914 founded the Johnson & Wales School of Business. Men of Vision explores the years from 1947 to the late 1980s, focusing on the contributions made by Morris Gaebe and Edward Triangolo, whose partnership and entrepreneurial spirit made JWU what it is today. Both documentaries were written and produced by Marian Gagnon, an associate professor in the School of Arts & Sciences.
New Certification Courses: The Office of Continuing Education Admissions announces five new certificate programs that can be completed in one year. They are designed for the adult student and credits earned can be applied toward a future degree. The programs are: Certificate in Financial Services, Certificate in Management, Certificate in Human Resource Management, Certificate in Operations Management and Travel Agent Certification. Financial aid is available. For more information, call (401)598-2342.
Roger Williams University
Community Connections: Incoming students will volunteer at 76 sites across Rhode Island and Massachusetts tomorrow as part of Community Connections 2008. In what’s become one of the largest service programs in the region, more than 1,100 volunteers will partner with a wide range of organizations to do just about everything from cleaning beaches to harvesting vegetables.
The daylong event — organized by RWU’s Feinstein Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement — is part of the orientation for incoming students. It’s designed to introduce them to the Roger Williams core value of community service and allow them a chance to become active members in their new community.
Since the event’s inception, community service hours at Roger Williams continue to increase every year. During the 2007-08 academic year, students performed more than 40,000 hours of community service.
Local philanthropist Alan Shawn Feinstein, founder of the Feinstein Foundation, will speak to the students prior to their departure to area sites. In 1998, RWU established the Feinstein Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement as a result of a gift from Feinstein, who financed similar programs throughout the state.
University of Rhode Island
Awarded: The department of art and art history has awarded Visual Arts Sea Grants to two professional artists whose work addresses the environment of the ocean and its coastal communities. The department administers the grants, which are financed annually by Rhode Island Sea Grant. This year‘s awards were given to Jannelle Iglesias, of Hollis, N.Y., and Kim Salerno, of Newport. Iglesias will be researching translucent/transparent forms and creatures found at the bottom of the ocean and creating an environment made from clear plastic trash and recyclables. The installation will blur the lines between plastic and organic, provoking a sense of the unusual. Salerno is creating an installation, White Sea, of cut paper organisms based on cephalopods and cnidarians. Light and shadow will create a luminous marine environment in which viewers can move. The Visual Arts Program of Rhode Island Sea Grant was established in 1988. For more information about the program go to http://www.uri.edu/artsci/art/v_a_grant.html
Head Coach Named: Joe Augustine, who has won a national championship as coach of the men’s hockey team, has been named head coach of the 2009 United States University Select Team, which will compete at the Winter World University Games, to be held Feb. 18-28 in Harbin, China. The U.S. University Select Team is comprised of players from collegiate ice hockey teams affiliated with the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA), the umbrella organization for collegiate club hockey in the United States. URI plays at the Division I club level. Five URI players remain in contention for a spot. Augustine started with 160 players from college and university club teams across the country. Then, a selection committee whittled the number to 88 players, who will battle for spots during camp in Detroit this month. The players will be assigned to one of four teams that will practice and then play against each other. The coaches and selection committee will make final selections at the conclusion of the camp. The URI players are Jonathan Biliouris, of North Smithfield; Paul Doran, of Monroe, N.Y.; Ben Herring, of Sewickley, Pa.; Devin Sheehan, of Binghamton, N.Y.; and Kyle Krannich, of Mendham, N.J. Augustine is in his 20th season as head coach at URI.
