Night at the PawSox: Tickets are available now for alumni and friends of the college to join in “Pride in CCRI Night” at the PawSox on Thursday, Aug. 21, at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket. The evening will start at 5 p.m. with an all-you-can-eat barbecue under the tent before the PawSox take on the Syracuse Chiefs, affiliated with the Toronto Blue Jays, at 7:05 p.m. Tickets cost $24; children 2 and younger will be admitted free. Blood drive: The Rhode Island Blood Center will hold a public blood drive on Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the Lower Commons at the Knight Campus in Warwick.
Course makes Providence debut: The Learner’s Journey, CCRI’s popular transition course for students new to college, will make its debut at the Liston Campus in Providence this fall. The course focuses on developing skills needed to succeed in higher education. The course will be offered from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Mondays, and the once-a-week, late-afternoon format was chosen to appeal to full-time day students studying at either CCRI or area high schools as well as those who work during the day.
Two other sections of the class will be offered this fall, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesdays at the Knight Campus in Warwick and from 3:30 to 6 p.m. on Thursdays at the Newport County Campus. For more information, visit www.ccri.edu/ foreignlang/LIBA-1000.shtml
Johnson & Wales University
Dean named: Rosita Hopper, of Hopkinton, has been named dean of libraries at the university. She was promoted from the position of director. Hopper’s new responsibilities will combine leadership of the Providence campus’ two library locations.
Advanced riding instruction: The Equine Center at Johnson & Wales University, in Rehoboth, will host the internationally renowned trainer Eckart Meyners on July 26 and 27. The practicum is not open to the public.
Summer Pops in the City: The university will host the 12th Annual Summer Pops in the City with the Rhode Island Philharmonic on Friday on Gaebe Commons on Weybosset Street. Proceeds from this outdoor concert benefit the university’s Morris J.W. Gaebe Scholarship Fund which helps students in need. Sal Viviano is the soloist. Tickets are $150; tables of 10 are $1,250 or $2,500. Tables at $2,500 include tableside service. Contact Johnson & Wales at (401) 598-5000 by July 23. A grand reception featuring the culinary talents of the university’s chefs and students begins at 6 p.m., followed by the outdoor concert at 7 p.m. The event is sponsored by TACO Inc., the John and Happy White Foundation, Happy White, and John White Jr., ’96. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held on Saturday, July 26.
Continuing education information night: JWU will offer a continuing education admissions information night on Wednesday, July 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Yena Center, 111 Dorrance St., Providence. Prospective business, hospitality, technology, culinary and pastry arts students may register in the admissions office. Scholarship money raised: The 18th Annual Golf Classic Fundraiser to benefit the university’s scholarship fund was held June 30 at Metacomet Country Club, raising more than $85,000.

Providence College
Financial Forum: Paul J. Maloney, CPA, CFP, assistant professor of finance and department chair at Providence College, recently participated in the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives’ “Compassion in Action” roundtable discussion in Washington, D.C.
The forum, “Financial Literacy and the Role of Faith-Based and Community Organizations,” focused on governmental leadership in addressing financial literacy at the federal and state level.
More than 70 government officials, policymakers, business and education leaders, foundation representatives and faith-based and community leaders took part in the discussion.
Two other Rhode Islanders also took part in the discussion: Jim Hedemark, executive director of the Rhode Island Jump$tart Coalition, and Justin Bownds, financial advisor for Bank of America Investment Services.
While in Washington, Maloney attended a meeting of the President’s Advisory Council on Financial Literacy, which is chaired by Charles Schwab of the Charles Schwab Corp. and is charged with working with the private and public sectors to increase financial education for youths and adults.
