Neighborhood of the Week: A place with a pretty good mix

Joseph Spremulli, left, and John Sepe, both of Providence, say they dine three or four times a week at Mazey’s Restaurant on Smith Street.
John Sgambato greets customers at his family’s business, Yacht Club Bottling Works, which has been bottling and selling soda, seltzer and water at its plant in Centredale since 1915.
The company is around the corner from Town Hall, which is on Smith Street, the main commercial street in Centredale.
Sgambato said the company still uses cane sugar for its sweetened drinks, because his family wants to do things the traditional way. Tradition is important in Centredale, the home of two elderly housing centers, Brook Village and Centredale Manor, he said.
“Basically, there are a lot of seniors, and a lot of youngsters starting out with their families,” Earl J. Clancy, a Realtor with DiBiase Associates, of North Providence, said. “It’s a pretty good mix of people.”
Outside of the elderly housing complexes, most of the residences in Centredale are single-family houses, 40 or 50 years old, “and well taken care of,” he said. There are few multifamilies in Centredale, but there are condominium complexes throughout North Providence, Clancy said.
The commercial area of Centredale has had some new growth, and several years ago, $1.8 million in public grant money was directed for streetscape improvements. Clancy said the Centredale post office moved to a new location, along with Tim Horton’s — a doughnut and sandwich shop, and the old post office has been rehabilitated and has new occupants, including a Twigs florist shop. “They’ve done a tremendous job with that building,” Clancy said.
Other businesses near the Town Hall include the Rhode Island Billiards Club, a comic-book retailer, and a new office building near the roundabout on Smith Street.
Single-family houses offered for sale in Centredale through the state’s Multiple Listing Service this month range in price from $199,900 for a three-bedroom, one-bath ranch built in 1964 to $339,900 for a three-bedroom, three-bath Colonial built in 2005.
