Park-like grounds on Cumberland cul-de-sac
01:00 AM EDT on Saturday, June 7, 2008

Quarterback Tom Brady’s gift of a plasma TV to a former offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots still hangs above the fireplace at 6 Avalon Place in Cumberland.
But that coach hasn’t looked at it for quite a while because he sold the dwelling along with the 42-inch flat screen television to Cindy and Doug Johnston about three years ago. And they intend to leave it behind when they move to smaller digs.
The Johnstons are selling 6 Avalon Place, built in 2001, for $899,900. They say now that their two children are leaving the nest, it’s time to downsize.
They no longer need to live in 5,058-square-feet of living space over three levels. It has an in-law apartment, four bedrooms, four full bathrooms, central air-conditioning and an unfinished roomy walk-up attic space.
“What are two people going to do with that much space?” Doug Johnston asks.
The dwelling, which is located on a cul-de-sac with three other new ultra oversized modern houses, sits on a half acre. It offers park-like grounds with a gunite pool that has a black bottom.
“The pool bottom reflects the sun, and that keeps the heat inside the pool,” he said. “The pool is heated off the furnace so you have much larger heat capacity.”
Around the pool and exterior of the house are plenty of plantings, a manicured lawn, and a fenced-in play area with a swing set. The front yard has a circular driveway, tumbled-tile walkways, stone benches and many wooden lamp-post-like yard lights.
From the front, 6 Avalon Place looks like a cross between a neo-Mediterranean and neo-French-style. It has stucco for the front exterior; clapboard covers the back of the home.
This eclectic dwelling boasts a giant arched window above the copper-roof overhang. It has tall thin windows, and a steeply pitched hipped roof. The main entrance has a fan light, side lights and thick pilasters.
Inside, there are high ceilings, skylights and oversized rooms. The foyer boasts two stories with a shelf over the front door, a large chandelier and a coat closet on either side of the front door.
To the right of the foyer is a study with a full bathroom; to the left is the dining room with a two-tiered recessed ceiling. Both have oak floors, chair rails and decorative panel moldings on the walls below the chair rail.
On this level is an oversized family room with fireplace and aforementioned plasma TV. The fireplace has a granite mantel that matches the granite on the counters covering the wet bar in the carpeted living room; the living room is separated from the family room by French doors.
The eat-in kitchen has a six-burner stove, tumbled-tile backsplash, granite covering the counters, walk-in pantry and white cabinets. Off the kitchen is a hallway that offers entry into the laundry room, coat closet and the door to the attached two-car garage.
The staircase with an oak banister leads to the top level, which has three carpeted bedrooms with lots of closet space, two full bathrooms, and a door leading to stairs to a walk-up attic with additional storage.
The master suite is separated from the other bedrooms via a bridge-like hallway with a view of the family room on one side and the foyer on the other.
“From here [the hallway] you have a view of the pool,” Johnston says, pointing out how the play and pool areas are separated from each other via a fencing. “And then the whole yard is fenced too.”
In the master bedroom are two walk-in closets (one is big enough for a table and chairs), recessed ceiling and lighting, a full bathroom and a skylight over the Jacuzzi.
As for the bottom level, it has a full bathroom, a family room, bedroom and kitchen with Formica counters. There’s plenty of closets and storage space. An unfinished room in the basement houses two oil tanks.
The pièce de résistance of the finished basement is that it has a door that leads to the back yard and pool area.
“This is such a quiet neighborhood,” says Cindy Johnston. “All of the houses are custom built.”
The 5,058-square-foot house at 6 Avalon Place in Cumberland is listed at $899,900. It has four bedrooms, four bathrooms, an in-ground pool, five zones of oil heat, central air-conditioning and an in-law apartment. The taxes for 2007 were $8,642. Rich Harrington of RE/MAX Properties, (401) 233-1948; rick@teamharrington.com, has the listing. An open house is scheduled tomorrow from 1:30 to 3:30. A different House of the Week appears each Saturday in the projoHomes section of The Providence Journal. The feature tells the story of the house and the people who have lived in it.
