In Foster, acre after acre of country elegance
11:10 AM EST on Monday, December 1, 2008
If your dream home includes a secluded country setting and lots of land — maybe with some horseback riding thrown in — this house at 88 Mt. Hygeia Rd., in Foster, could be just the place for you.
The expanded Cape has two fireplaces, four wood stoves, three bedrooms, three full baths, an office suite, a barn and nearly 18 acres, much of it wooded. The property is for sale at $399,999.
“It was so beautiful and peaceful,” said owner Suzanne Schoenfeld, who lived there with her family for10 years. They have since relocated to Arizona. “It was a great place to have little kids. There was so much room to run around. … There’s a wonderful feeling of openness having that much land.”
The house was built in 1985. And in 2002, the Schoenfelds converted the original garage into an addition, with a great room on the first floor and an office suite on the second. The addition brought the living space in the house to nearly 3,000 square feet.
The house is set back about 300 feet from Mt. Hygeia Road, providing plenty of privacy. An airy entry way, floored in porcelain ceramic tiles, divides the original house from the new addition. The entry has skylights, a ceiling fan and several large closets.
Turn left after entering the house, and you come to the great room, with gleaming hardwood floors, and plenty of natural light entering by way of skylights and windows. There’s an extended window seat beneath a long row of windows overlooking the front yard. The seat itself lifts up for additional storage. The great room has a wood stove, and there’s even a pass-through opening in the wall so you can transfer wood from outside without having to traipse through the rest of the house.
Above the great room is a suite containing two small offices and a full bath, with sliding doors between them for privacy.
On the opposite side of the entryway is the kitchen, with a new floor and stove, and then the dining room, which has a skylight, wide pine plank floors and a fireplace with a woodstove set inside it. Between the kitchen and the dining room is a full bath and two large closets.
The substantial living room runs the width of the house, also with a skylight, more pine floors and another fireplace with woodstove. The back half of the living room is dominated by a huge window overlooking the yard and built-in shelving for books or electronics. Both the living room and dining room have cream-colored walls, with the trim, windows and shelving painted a contrasting maroon.
Upstairs there are three bedrooms and a full bath. The master bedroom, with walls painted a pale green, has big windows and abundant closet space.
The unfinished basement has lots of shelving, washer/dryer and a wood stove that can heat the upper floors of the house. For more conventional heating, 88 Mt. Hygeia Rd. is equipped with an oil furnace. The house also has central air conditioning. There are three zones for heating, two for air conditioning.
Since the Schoenfelds had converted the old garage into an addition, they also built a large, free-standing garage with a workbench in one corner, a storage loft and plenty of electrical outlets. Not far from the house, there’s a fenced-in plot that would be ideal for a garden.
A packed earth and gravel road, equipped with lights controlled by motion sensors, leads to a barn with a hayloft, electrical service and another woodstove. The property is zoned agricultural/residential, with horses and other livestock permitted for personal or family use. (Suzanne Schoenfeld said her family never had horses, although they did keep chickens on the property.)
Past the barn, there’s a cleared pasture about an acre in size, with fieldstone walls bordering the woods on the far side. Three walking trails run through the woods. Towards the back a stream runs from north to south. The property is within walking distance of two state-operated trout fishing areas.
“We still miss Foster, we really liked it there,” Schoenfeld said. “Everyone is very down-to-earth.” At the same time, she said, there was plenty of shopping within easy driving distance, and Providence was just a half hour away.
The property at 88 Mt.Hygeia Rd. is for sale at $399,999. The home has 2,950 feet of living space, plus a large free-standing garage and a barn. Total area is 17.8 acres, much of it wooded. Property taxes are $5,635 per year. The Realtor is Lucy Heelon, Keller Williams Realty, (401) 785-1700 or (401) 641-2211. Email at l.heelon@kw.com. There will be an open house tomorrow from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
