A Cape-style house at 8 Massasoit Ave. in Countryside, which is near the Pawtucket Country Club and Slater Park.

On the Seekonk line, across Armistice Boulevard from the Pawtucket Country Club and next door to Slater Park, is one of Pawtucket’s most secluded neighborhoods, Countryside.

“It’s a secret. A lot of people don’t even know it’s there … Unless you’re from Pawtucket, a lot of people don’t even know about it,” said Jan Hall, who has lived in Countryside with her husband since 1973. Their real estate business, Hall Realty Group, is near the neighborhood.

Hall said the houses seem to have been built over a number of years, from the 1940s to the 1960s, by a number of different builders and architects. There is a wide range of housing styles in the quiet, leafy neighborhood.

“There are no two houses alike, and there are between 135 and 140 houses,” she said. “It’s not a cookie-cutter neighborhood in any way.”

She said four or five of the houses in Countryside have Seekonk addresses, but the remainder are in Pawtucket.

Most of the houses appear to be on the larger side of average, even the ranches and Capes. Hall said it is one of the more expensive neighborhoods in Pawtucket, commanding higher prices because of its peaceful location.

“It’s adjacent to Slater Park, which is really nice,” Hall said. “The homes are all in excellent repair. There’s a mixture of young and old alike … I think it’s one of the most beautiful neighborhoods anywhere.”

“It’s very rare to see a short sale or an REO [real estate owned, or foreclosed property] in there,” she added.

There were six houses for sale in Countryside last week.

The least expensive, at $270,000, was a 1962 ranch at 101 King Philip Rd. with two bedrooms and two full bathrooms and an 18-by-24-foot addition at the rear with a natural rock fireplace, skylights and a cathedral ceiling.

The most expensive listing, $599,900, is a custom-built 1967 Colonial at 12 Alexander McGregor Rd., with 10 rooms and 3,400 square feet of space, including five bedrooms, three full bathrooms and one half bath, a remodeled kitchen with custom cabinets and granite counters, and a heated indoor pool.

Hall said the troubled real estate market has had its effect in Countryside, and today it is easier to sell the lower-priced homes in the neighborhood than the higher-priced ones.

Of the three sales in Countryside in recent months, all were under $400,000, she said; one was $280,000, one was $312,000 and one was $346,000.

There is no formal neighborhood association in Countryside, Hall said, but there are many informal social gatherings. “It’s just friendly neighbors,” she said. “There’s a really wonderful mix of people. It’s a beautiful entity unto itself.”
