House of the Week: An Italianate on Hope Street in Bristol
When Martin Bennett built his new house at 631 Hope St. in Bristol during the 1850s, an architectural style called Italianate was all the rage. As the name implies, the idea was to have the house evoke an Italian villa. The two-story building, white with black shutters, has a flat roof, four large symmetrical windows facing the street, and an arched doorway that is echoed on the second floor by another arch that leads to a small balcony.
