Ask RIDOT: Interstate 95 shield will be replaced
03:37 PM EDT on Tuesday, July 17, 2007
Q. Get on Route 37 West from Post Road and you will soon come upon the intersection for Interstate 95. First is the northbound exit on your right — no problem there. Then the southbound exit is on your left. Shortly before this exit, you see a sign advising that it is coming up. The only problem is that the sign at the exit itself just has a big arrow pointing toward the left, but nothing that says “95.” There is, however, a large green void on the sign where I’m sure the familiar red, white and blue Interstate medallion shape once was. I’m sure many visitors to Rhode Island who may be unfamiliar with its roads have been thrown off by this. Will it be fixed?
A. The sign you are referring to is at Exit 4A on Route 37 West and provides access to Route 95 South, and you are correct that the Interstate 95 shield is missing. RIDOT is having its Maintenance Division work to replace the shield.
In the meantime, there is another overhead sign approximately a quarter mile before Exit 4A and this one does have the shield, and indicates that the distance to Exit 4A is a quarter mile, and that it leads to I-95 South. We agree that the sign missing the shield may be confusing to motorists unfamiliar with the area and we are working to get this issue resolved.
