Fast facts: NASCAR penalized Martin Truex 150 points on Tuesday after his car failed its initial inspection last week at Daytona. The No. 1 Chevrolet failed to fit NASCAR’s roof template and the car was seized. The penalty drops Truex from 14th in the standings to 18th.

Last race: Denny Hamlin held off teammate Kyle Busch at Daytona International Speedway to extend Joe Gibbs Racing’s dominance in the series, driving the No. 20 to its ninth victory of the season.

Fast facts: JGR drivers have dominated this season — cars owned by the organization have won 12 times. Hamlin (3), Busch (4), Joey Logano (1) and Tony Stewart (5) have combined to win 13 of the 18 series races this year. Busch also has a victory for Braun Racing. ... ... Harvick is the only multiple winner at Chicagoland. Ryan Newman has won two poles.

Last race: Scott Dixon’s bid for a fourth straight victory on the road course at Watkins Glen ended with an uncharacteristic mistake on lap 41 that gave Ryan Hunter-Reay the opening he needed to earn his first IndyCar victory. Dixon, preparing to make a run at leader Darren Manning after a long caution, spun out under yellow and was hit from behind by contender Ryan Briscoe.

Fast facts: Hunter-Reay’s win was also the first for Rahal Letterman Racing since 2004. ... Tony Kanaan injured his left wrist after crashing during a prerace warmup session last weekend, but still finished third. He gained 16 points in the standings and now trails leader Dixon by 66. ... Helio Castroneves had his worst outing of the season at Watkins Glen. He started last after breaking a throttle cable during qualifying and lost a lap early in the race after encountering more car trouble. But he fought back to finish 16th and lost only five points in the standings, to 48 shy of Dixon. ... Buddy Rice’s fourth-place run at Watkins Glen was his best finish since placing fourth at Iowa in June 2007.

Mopar Mile-High Nationals

Schedule: Today, qualifying, 3:15 p.m. (ESPN2, 10 p.m., tape); Sunday, eliminations, 2 p.m. (ESPN2, 8 p.m., tape).

Track: Bandimere Speedway.

Last event: Doug Herbert, who has titled his season campaign “For My Boys,” beat Brandon Bernstein at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals on June 29. It was Herbert’s 10th career victory in Top Fuel and first of the season. Tony Pedregon (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Hector Arana (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were winners. Pedregon moved to second in the Funny Car standings with the win, trailing Tim Wilkerson, 863-712. Anderson, who earned his fourth win of the season and 55th of his career, leads the Pro Stock standings 878-826, over Kurt Johnson. Arana won for the first time in his 18-year career.

Fast facts: Eleven days after Scott Kalitta was killed in a racing accident, the NHRA reduced the length of Top Fuel and Funny Car races from a quarter-mile to 1,000 feet on July 2 in an interim safety measure. The 320-foot reduction will start this week. The Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle classes will continue to run a quarter-mile. ... For the first time since 2000, a driver other than one from John Force Racing or Ron Capps leads the Funny Car standings entering the “Western Swing,” which consists of events at Morrison, Kent, Wash., and Sonoma, Calif. ... Tony Schumacher was denied a third straight Top Fuel victory with his second-round loss at Norwalk, but he still owns a 253-point lead in the standings after sitting in fifth and sixth, respectively, at this point of the last two seasons. ... Anderson is back atop the Pro Stock standings for the first time since carrying it into the Bristol, Tenn., event on May 18.

NASCAR CRAFTSMAN TRUCKS

Last race: Ron Hornaday won the O’Reilly 200 on June 28 to take the points lead, leading the final 129 laps and enduring a green-white-checker finish. Hornaday was leading on the 199th lap when a crash starting between Ted Musgrave and Willie Allen brought out the ninth caution and eventually a red flag as the track was cleared of debris. On the green-white-checker finish, Hornaday hit his marks and beat Erik Darnell. Hornaday, who led 139 of 204 laps, won his third race of the season and his 36th in the series.

FORMULA ONE

Last race: Lewis Hamilton mastered wild and wet racing conditions to score a runaway victory at the British Grand Prix and throw the drivers championship wide open. Hamilton’s third victory of the season gives him 48 points. He is tied with Ferrari drivers Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen, but leads the championship chase based on his better finishes in the other races.
