Super Aguri withdraws from F1
01:00 AM EDT on Saturday, May 10, 2008
Super Aguriwithdrew on Tuesday from Formula One and disbanded itself, ending owner Aguri Suzuki’s two-year struggle to run a team in the most-watched motor sport.
The Japanese squad has been courting investors since its inception and was dealt a blow last month when London-based Magma Group Ltd. ditched plans to buy it.
Super Aguri’s entry into the championship in 2006 was delayed because it failed to pay a $48 million bond to the sport’s ruling body on time. Tokyo Chunichi Sports reported yesterday that the team was denied access to this weekend’s Turkish Grand Prix because of its financial situation.
“We find it difficult to establish a way to continue the activities within the environment surrounding F-1 and as a result I have concluded to withdraw from the championship,” Aguri said in an e-mailed statement.
Ranked 10th out of 11 teams last season, Super Aguri drivers Takuma Sato and Anthony Davidson haven’t scored a point in four races so far this year.
