New Nationwide Series car to debut

Nascar will debut a new car for its second-tier Nationwide Series in a test session for manufacturers at Richmond International Raceway next week.

Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford and Toyota will each bring two of the new-generation cars to the Richmond, Va., track for testing on Sept. 8 and 9, Nascar said in a statement.

Nascar introduced a new car for its top Sprint Cup Series last season. The car was designed to improve driver safety and limit the changes that teams could make to the body to improve aerodynamics. Nationwide Series owners have been reluctant to change cars because of the cost involved in building the new model.

“We’ve had this style of chassis for more than two years in the Nascar Sprint Cup Series and many questions have already been answered,” said Robin Pemberton, Nascar’s vice president of competition. “We’ve also been talking to teams and they’ve indicated they’d be better suited budget-wise to spend a full season building cars instead of a mid-year transition.”

Nationwide cars have a shorter wheelbase and less horsepower than the ones used in the Sprint Cup. The circuit runs as a preliminary event to Sprint Cup races at most tracks and drivers from the top series sometimes participate in Nationwide events.
