HOCKENHEIM, Germany — Lewis Hamilton again showed his ability in wet conditions by leading yesterday’s first practice session for the German Grand Prix.

The McLaren driver had the fastest lap of 1 minute, 15.337 seconds to edge teammate Heikki Kovalainen by 0.129 seconds at the Hockenheim circuit.

Felipe Massa of Ferrari was the only other driver under the 1:16.00 mark, for third, ahead of Renault’s Fernando Alonso and Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen.

Rain has hit three of the past four GPs, with Hamilton winning two of the races to move into a three-way tie atop Formula One’s championship, along with Massa and Raikkonen. All three drivers have 48 points, two better than Robert Kubica of BMW Sauber.

Showers are expected here through tomorrow.

Kubica didn’t get a chance to challenge Hamilton due to an accident. The Polish driver snapped the axel on his front left wheel with 11 minutes left after going over the white line at the stadium corner to slide off through the gravel into the wall padding. He managed a best time of 1:18.779 from eight laps.
