A wide range of vintage automobiles will be on display tomorrow at the 2008 Newport Concours d’Elegance, including a splendid 1912 Mercedes race car, a 1935 J. Walker LaGrande Duesenberg and a 1952 Bentley R-Type, which is coming from Pennsylvania.
“The original owner is bringing (the Bentley),” said John Sweeney, spokesman for the show. “He bought it new and is still driving it.”
Sweeney said the show ranges from a 1903 Pope Hartford to a number of classic American muscle cars from the late 1960s and early 1970s.
“There really is something for everyone,” he said, adding that about 100 cars and motorcycles are scheduled to be on display.
Sweeney said entries will be judged in about 25 different categories with awards presented to the best in each class, as well as the car judged the Best in the Show. Members of the public will also vote on their favorite car, with a special Spectators’ Choice Award going to the vehicle with the most votes.
Sweeney said a 1934 Packard with a body by LeBaron, a V12 engine and pontoon fenders was the zenith of art deco styling of the period.
Other classics include a 1961 Aston Martin DB-4 coupe body by Touring and a pair of 1966 opalescent maroon Jaguars from the same Connecticut owner, a 1966 XKE coupe and a matching Mark II sedan.
Sweeney said the XKE is just out of restoration and has never been shown, while the Mark II is the highest scoring Jaguar sedan in the nation.
England and the United States meet in a 1950 Allard J2, which has an English body with an original race modified Mercury engine. The car was raced in the 1951 Pebble Beach race in California.
The concours, which runs from 10 am to 4 pm, will be held at the same location as last year, Bayside at Belle Mer on Goat Island in Newport.
Admission is $20; $10 for youngsters 12 to 15 and free for children with adult supervision. Parking is available just outside the facility for $3. Indoor sit-down lunch is also available in addition to food from various vendors, Sweeney said.
