License can be renewed from out of state

01:00 AM EST on Sunday, December 23, 2007

Q. I am out of town on travel with my job and my license is about to expire. I know that I can renew it by providing certain information, but one of the requirements is to provide a photo waiver affidavit. I would like to know if this affidavit consists of a form provided by the DMV or do I just submit a notarized statement?

A. The DMV provides the forms necessary to renew a license while out of state. While technically called a “Valid Without Photo” license, now that we have moved to a digital license system, chances are your photo is already in the system and we would be able to process and send a photo license to you.

Please contact the main DMV office at (401) 462-5748 and request that the proper paperwork be sent to you at your out-of-state location, or you may request this in writing to DMV — License Section, 100 Main St., Pawtucket, RI 02860. You must complete all the paperwork, have an eye test performed and return the documents with the required fee. These renewals are only issued for a 2-year period. The eye test can be filled out by your Rhode Island eye doctor and forwarded to the DMV at 100 Main St., Pawtucket, RI 02860. You must allow at least 2 to 3 weeks turnaround time to receive your new license. We can renew any license that is expired up to but not over three years.

For more information, you can also visit our Web site at www.dmv.ri.gov/licenses/ out_state_renewal.php.
