Two competitors die in Russia-China race01:00 AM EDT on Saturday, June 21, 2008MOSCOW (AP) — A Chinese rally driver and French motorcyclist were killed in separate accidents during the Transoriental, organizers of the Russia to China race said. Xu Lang, the official Chinese driver of Team Zhengzhou Nissan, was fatally injured Monday in an accident in Russia after he stopped to help another vehicle. Philippe Tonin died Tuesday after he was hit by a truck of Russia’s Team Kamaz while riding in Kazakhstan, the Transoriental said on its Web site. A towing cable broke and hit Xu in the face, and he died Tuesday after being flown by helicopter to a hospital in Orenburg, organizers said in a statement. “The race organizers and all of its competitors are in shock,” the statement said. The race began June 12 in St. Petersburg, Russia, and will finish in Beijing on June 28. |
