This cat likes to get up close and personal

Special to The Journal

I’m addicted to cuddling. Some might think that’s a bad thing, but others might say that cuddling is what cats do best. What we were put on earth to do, maybe. If you are the kind of human who thinks that intense snuggling is a negative trait, then please don’t adopt me. I need to be appreciated for who I am.

My name is Star, I’m seven years old, and I’m a victim of divorce. When couples break up and move away, the pets are often left behind. So here I am, in a cage at the shelter, and not very happy about it. I have been here since October — that’s 10 long months, folks — and I’m experiencing the fearfulness that comes from being cage-bound for so long. I will need gentle handling from my new human, whoever he or she may be.

I’m a long-haired brown tiger, with a white chest and pretty face markings. My best feature is my bright green eyes. I need to be brushed a lot, due to my thick coat, and at the moment I’m shaved down to a shorter hairdo. Please know that I am good for the groomer, so you will be able to keep me looking gorgeous.

I love to eat and my favorite treat is canned cat food. I’m chatty and I am happy to sleep in the bed with humans (it’s that cuddling thing again).

My past life is not something I like to dwell upon. I lived with other cats, but I never fit in with them. I was misunderstood, an outcast, and I admit I am still a bit afraid of other felines. I leave dogs alone and I ignore horses, but I don’t ever want to live with other cats again.

My hobby is hunting. I will bring you little gifts after one of my expeditions to the great outdoors. I will go to the door and meow to go outside. I was raised as an indoor/outdoor kitty, though I of course know how to use the litter box. I also use a scratching post, so my manners are excellent.

I don’t know why I haven’t been adopted yet. I’m a lovely girl who needs someone to adore. If you’re looking for love, call me.

Please visit me at the Animal Rescue League of Southern Rhode Island, 506B Curtis Corner Rd. in South Kingstown, or call (401) 783-7606. We’re open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

THANK YOU to everyone — and there were so many of you — who donated money so Abby, our injured black Lab, could have her leg repaired. We are thrilled to announce that Abby’s surgery is scheduled for July 16, and we will be giving updates each week here in this column. Your kindness and generosity have overwhelmed us, and we are very grateful.
