Photographer documents plight
01:00 AM EDT on Sunday, May 18, 2008

Steve McGarva isn’t the only Rhode Islander interested in helping Puerto Rico’s abandoned dogs. Traer Scott of Providence produced a recently published book documenting the animal crisis in Puerto Rico and Mexico: Street Dogs (Merrell, 160 pages, $22.95). The coffee table photography presents portraits of roughly 90 stray dogs, and includes images of them with McGarva.
This book is a follow-up for Scott, a fine-arts photographer and animal shelter volunteer, who previously had authored a book on a related theme: Shelter Dogs, also published by Merrell, which focused on dogs in Providence shelters.
Images from Scott’s books will be exhibited at Gail Cahalan Gallery, 200 Allens Ave., Providence, from June 11 to July 5. The opening reception will be June 14, from 4 to 7 p.m. (10 percent of sales from that day will benefit the Providence Animal Rescue League). Regular exhibit hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, call (401) 744-0295.
