AMHERST, Mass. — Sophomore goalie Alex Beaudry made a career-high 47 saves as Providence College defeated No. 17 Massachusetts, 2-1, Saturday at the Mullins Center.

With the win, the Friars improved to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in Hockey East action. The Minutemen suffered their first defeat as they move to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in league play.

The Friars took a 1-0 lead at the 6:15 mark of the first period as Kyle MacKinnon scored his second goal of the season. Freshman Alex Velischek slid the puck to the top of the left circle to MacKinnon who ripped a shot past UMass goalie Paul Dainton. Senior Mark Fayne also assisted on the goal.

Providence increased its lead to 2-0 at the 10:53 mark of the second period when sophomore Matt Bergland scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

The Minutemen cut the lead in half as they scored a power-play goal at 1:49 of the third period. Matt Irwin ripped a slap shot from the high slot that beat Beaudry.

UMass carried the play the rest of the way, but Beaudry held his ground.

The Minutemen had a chance to score the equalizer as they went on the power play at 16:25. Providence was able to thwart that as Beaudry made a point-blank save on a shot from the slot by Will Ortiz at 17:46.

For Beaudry, whose previous career high was 42 stops at UMass on January 16, 2009, it marks his third-career 40-plus save performance.
