12:04 PM EST on Sunday, November 30, 2008
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. –– The Providence College hockey team outshot Union, 29-19, but Dutchmen goaltender Corey Milan made 27 saves and center Jason Walters had two assists to lead them to a 4-2 victory last night at Messa Rink.
Left wing Matt Cook scored the winning goal at 2:53 of the third period to move the Dutchmen to 6-4-1. The Friars fell to 2-11-1.
The Dutchmen took a 1-0 lead with six seconds left in the first period when Mike Schreiber fired a slap shot from just inside the blue line that bounced off the pad of PC goaltender Justin Gates of Cranston and into the net.
Union added to its lead at 1:25 of the second period when Mario Valery-Trabucco scored on a slap shot from the top of the left circle to give his team a 2-0 advantage.
The Friars had several scoring chances in the period as they had three power-play opportunities, but they weren’t able to convert.
PC scored 19 seconds into the third period to cut the lead to 2-1. While on the power play, John Cavanagh of Warwick pounced on a loose puck in front and netted his team-leading fifth goal of the season. Matt Bergland and Pierce Norton assisted on the goal.
The Dutchmen regained their two-goal lead at 2:53, however, when Matt Cook skated in on a breakaway before scoring his first goal of the season.
The Friars responded at 4:05, trimming the lead to 3-2. Mark Fayne ripped a slap shot from just inside the blue line that eluded Milan.
Union added a goal at 19:04 to seal the win.
The Friars will be back in action on Friday night, in a nonconference game at Quinnipiac (7:30).
