BURLINGTON, Vt. — Mike Spillane stopped 33 shots and led 15th-ranked Vermont (3-3-1 overall, 2-2-1 Hockey East) to a 3-0 victory over Providence College (5-3, 1-2) on Sunday at the Gutterson Fieldhouse.

The Friars outshot the Catamounts, 10-5, in the first period and had three power-play opportunities but were unable to score.

The Catamounts struck first at the 7:34 mark of the second period, when Chris McCarthy fired a wrist shot from the right circle that beat PC goalie Alex Beaudry over his right shoulder.

Justin Milo then increased Vermont’s lead to 2-0 at the 14:22 mark, when he scored on a high wrist shot from the bottom of the left circle.

The Friars had another scoring chance on the man-advantage late in the second period as senior Mark Fayne ripped a shot from the point, but Spillane was able to get his stick on a shot labeled for the top left corner of the net with 43 seconds left in the period.

At the 13:00 mark of the third period, PC sophomore Matt Bergland was sent in on a breakaway, but Spillane made the save on Bergland’s back-handed attempt and then turned aside the rebound effort off the stick of freshman Aaron Jamnick.

Milo sealed the result with his second goal of the game at 18:05 to make the score 3-0.

PC finished with a 33-23 shot advantage.

The Friars are back in action Nov. 17 at 7 p.m., when they host Brown in the 24th annual Mayor’s Cup at Schneider Arena.
