10:15 AM EST on Wednesday, January 14, 2009
BOSTON –– Freshman goaltender Alex Beaudry made 39 saves and Matt Bergland scored two goals to lead the Providence College hockey team to a 4-2 upset of second-ranked Boston University last night at Agganis Arena. It marked PC’s first win over BU since Nov. 17, 2006.
The Friars jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 9:30 mark of the first period when junior Chris Eppich scored his third goal of the season. Eppich took a long feed and skated in on a breakaway before firing a wrist shot off the left post and into the net. Senior Matt Taormina and freshman David Brown assisted on the goal.
The Terriers took advantage of their first power-play chance of the night and evened the score at 15:50 when Brandon Yip recorded his 10th goal of the season.
Bergland scored two second-period goals to give the Friars a 3-1 lead. After battling along the boards behind the net, sophomore Ian O’Connor gained possession of the puck and set up Bergland right in front as PC regained the lead at 8:24. Bergland scored again, this time on a two-man advantage at 12:08, to give PC a two-goal lead.
The Terriers used a two-man advantage of their own to cut the PC lead to 3-2 just 21 seconds into the third period. Chris Higgins was set up right in front as he tapped in his 10th goal of the season. The Friars regained their two-goal lead at 10:12 when O’Connor scored his fourth goal of the season. O’Connor stole the puck from a BU defenseman behind the BU net and came around the net before firing a shot that was saved by goaltender Grant Rollheiser. The rebound came back to O’Connor who scored on a back hander.
Beaudry, who was playing in his second collegiate game, finished with 38 stops, including several point-blank saves to help the Friars earn their first win over a ranked opponent this season.
The Friars return to action on Friday when they travel to Amherst to battle UMass.
