The Friars' win overshadowed the performance of Shavonte Zellous, who scored 28 points for Pitt (11-3, 1-1 Big East). Zellous, the nation's fourth-leading scorer at 23.1 points per game, had 16 in the first half. Pitt also got 18 points from Xenia Stewart.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Providence (7-7, 1-1 Big East), which got 14 points from Mi-Khida Hankins and 13 from Trinity Hull.
Counoyer credited consecutive matchups against nationally ranked Duke and 13-1 St. John's for the Friars' edge.
"We kept pushing and pushing after we took the lead in the first half," she said. "The Duke game taught us to play with our heads up and that was the mentality that we came in with tonight."
Providence narrowed a 23-14 deficit with a 12-2 run late in the opening half to take the lead. Catherine Bove's 3-pointer with two minutes remaining in the first half pushed Providence's advantage to 34-27.
Providence's 40 points in the first half were a season high for the Friars, who led by as many as 16 with 9:14 to go in the second half. Pitt was 0-for-11 from 3-point range. The Friars also outrebounded the Panthers 52-35.
Pitt closed to 50-44 early in the second half following a layup by Pepper Wilson but Providence responded with a 10-1 run.
Providence shot 53.8 percent from the field in the second half to Pitt's 34.3 percent.
"They shot the heck out of the ball," Pitt coach Agnus Berenato said. "And that's what you have to do to beat a Top 25 team."
The last time the Friars defeated a ranked opponent was Feb. 19, 2008, when they topped then-No. 22 Syracuse 62-58 at home.
"We spread the ball around tonight. It was all about team unity," fourth-year Friars coach Phil Seymore said. "This is a great win for our program."
