PROVIDENCE (AP) — Chante Black scored 17 points and Abby Waner added 13 as No. 6 Duke won its ninth straight game, beating Providence yesterday, 66-49.
Jasmine Thomas and Karima Christmas scored nine points apiece for the Blue Devils (11-1), which turned back a second-half surge from unranked Providence that cut the lead to one point.
Duke took a 32-24 lead into the half, but Providence went on a 17-10 run and pulled within 42-41 on a 3-pointer from freshman reserve Chandler McCabe. That was the closest the Friars (6-6) got as the Blue Devils used a 24-8 run to pull away down the stretch.
Shantee Darrian led Providence with 13 points and a season-high 15 rebounds. Chelsea Marandola added 11 for the Friars.
This was the first meeting between the teams since Dec. 6, 1987, an 87-75 Duke win.
